On the 13th of this month, myself and a couple of my friends from the dormitory, French students who are also doing research at the Engineering campus, went to a Japanese household for dinner. This was no normal dinner however! Irori is an old-style Japanese way of dining (typically done in winter) where the family and guests gather around a big pot hung over a burning fire.
It is with this that dinner is prepared, cooked, and served. For tonight’s dinner there were various side dishes served as well, in addition to a shabu-shabu style soup where fish and meat are boiled in broth and eaten with the soup.
Everything was delicious! We even had a live musical performance and coffee!
Even after 9 months in Japan, I am still continually amazed by Japanese hospitality.
